New York Exposition of Short Film & Video 2007
December, 2007
The New York Expo is the longest-running festival of independent film in the United States. Focusing on films and videos under 60 minutes long, it screens a wide range of domestic and international work, from indie filmmaking to video art, at the Cinema Village Theater in lower Manhattan.
Founded by Nick Manning in 1966, the festival has an open call for entries and sifts through more than 700 every year. A series of juries assembles the final programme, while juried Gold, Silver, Bronze and Best Debut awards are presented at the end of the event. As well as attracting the cream of the New York independent filmmaking community, the event is also well attended by industry scouts.
Challenging, unconventional filmmaking is the Expo’s mainstay. As well as providing a platform for new filmmakers – including, over the years, Spike Lee, George Lucas and Danny DeVito – it also showcases avant-garde film and video work as well as more mainstream independent filmmaking.
