Ice Skating at Rockefeller Center 2007
October 2012 – April 2013
Few scenes are more heart-warming than the rink full of happy skaters cavorting in front of the spectacular floodlit towers of New York’s Rockefeller Center, which has welcomed skaters every Christmas since 1936 and has become a New York Christmas institution.
It wouldn’t be winter without a spin around the New York City’s most celebrated attractions. The world-famous Ice Rink at Rockefeller Center has become a quintessential New York City winter experience for generations. Here you’ll find New Yorkers and visitors alike, skating amid the watchful eye of the gilded Prometheus statue and the unique urban backdrop of Rockefeller Center’s sparkling lights.
The setting could hardly be more spectacular. Rockefeller Center’s commanding Art Moderne towers frame the tiny rink, together with the signature Christmas tree. The tree’s lights and the rink make a colourful, soft-focus contrast to the brightly-lit urbanity of the skyscrapers, proving that inside their gruff metropolitan shells, even New Yorkers have a soft spot for old-fashioned Christmas scenes.
There are always long lines to skate in the Rockefeller Center Skating Rink. Be prepared to wait out in the cold for at least one hour if you come during the peak days which are around Christmas and New Year.
The Rockefeller Center Ice Skating Rink is open through April. After the holiday season is over, the prices are cheaper and the crowds are less. So it’s a great time to enjoy some ice skating at the rink.
