Coldplay Viva la Vida Tour 2008
26-27 October, 2008
The Viva la Vida Tour is a 2008 concert tour by the English band Coldplay, in support of their album Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. The tour began on June 16, 2008 with a free concert at Brixton Academy in London, followed by other free shows in Barcelona and New York City. The tour will cover over 60 shows in 2008, with stops in North America, Europe, and Asia. The band will be supported by Shearwater, Santogold and Duffy for the first North American leg, and by Albert Hammond, Jr. of The Strokes for the European leg
The stage setup consisted of a stripped down main stage and two catwalks; Coldplay also performed amongst audience members. Instead of a giant videoscreen on-stage, the band opted for six hanging giant lightbulbs that displayed images and closeups. Lead singer Chris Martin dubbed the fixtures as “magic balls”, while drummer Will Champion added they will also release confetti butterflies.
Coldplay was accompanied by Oxfam during the tour. Volunteers were stationed at each venue to tell concertgoers how to reduce poverty; the organization’s logo and website was featured on one of the light ball fixtures during each concert.
