Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade
January 2008
Each year America’s great civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr is commemorated in a grand parade down Manhattan’s Fifth Ave, from 61st to 86th St. Dr King fought for freedom, equality and the dignity of all races during the 1950s and 1960s.
He is remembered in particular for the “I Have a Dream” speech which he delivered to a rally in Washington, DC in 1963. His life was tragically cut short just five years later when he was shot dead in a hotel in Memphis, Tennessee.
The parade is a chance for people of all colours and creeds to join together in celebration of Martin Luther King’s life and to remember his message for change through non-violence. Each year the famous words that he spoke during the address are remembered by thousands as they march.
