New York City Pride 2008
22 – 29 June 2008
New York’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Pride week has a special sense of history that no other Pride celebration can offer. The organisers expect 250,000 marchers to follow the lavender strip down 5th Avenue on 29 June, with a further 350,000 spectators to cheer them on.
New York was the birthplace of the Gay Rights movement following the Stonewall Riots of 1969, where a backlash against police harassment prompted the first outspoken display of queer defiance. New York City Pride annually commemorates that initial need to assert gay identity. Each year the event attracts more and more visitors, both gay and straight.
