1989: “When Harry Met Sally” was shot in many well-known locations in New York. Harry, played by Billy Crystal, encounters Sally, played by Meg Ryan, at the Shakespeare & Co. bookstore at 79th and Broadway in Manhattan, now closed. He invites her to the movies in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Egyptian Exhibition Room. They buy a Christmas tree on West 96th Street between Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue, in front of a store called the Plant Shed. The romantic comedy’s best-known scene was filmed at Katz’s Delicatessen at 205 East Houston Street.

This film is the English-language debut of director Joan Chen, the actress known for appearing in THE LAST EMPEROR and TWIN PEAKS. The restaurant seen in the film, 458, does not exist in reality but during production many New Yorkers stopped by the fake restaurant that they created for the set, wanting to eat there.
