Brooklyn Bridge Swim 2007
September 8, 2007
On September 8, 2007, the Manhattan Island Foundation will present the second annual Brooklyn Bridge Swim. The event will start on the Manhattan side in East River Park, swim parallel along the southern line of the Brooklyn Bridge then North, Northeast along the seawall of Empire-Fulton State Park to the beach in Brooklyn Bridge Park immediately prior to the Manhattan Bridge. This is a very challenging course, crossing the river rather than utilizing the tidal assist available in an event that runs upstream or downstream. Swimmers who are unable to complete the 1-km distance in the 45-minute time limit will be pulled by boat from the event. Based on our knowledge of the tides and currents, the equivalent swimming distance of this event is more like an intense 1.1 mile swim in a pool, but the time limit constraint remains the same.
Course
Swimmers will enter the water at Dover Street in East River Park underneath the Brooklyn Bridge. They will swim out parallel along the southern line of the Brooklyn Bridge then North, Northeast along the seawall of Empire-Fulton State Park to the beach in Brooklyn Bridge Park immediately prior to the Manhattan Bridge. A combination of buoys, support boats, and kayaks will mark/monitor the swim route to help swimmers remain on course.
