Great costumes, plenty of food and lots of live music make this one of New York’s bigger street parades. The Columbus Day Parade on Fifth Ave at 44th St celebrates the “discovery” of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492.
The parade starts on Fifth Ave at 47th St and goes up to 72nd St.
On October 11, 2010, Fifth Avenue will be transformed during the Columbus Day Parade, the world’s largest celebration of Italian-American culture. The parade will be led by Grand Marshal Maria Bartiromo. Ms. Bartiromo is the anchor of CNBC’s “Closing Bell,” and host and managing editor of the nationally syndicated “The Wall Street Journal Report with Maria Bartiromo.” Honorees included Frank Bisignano, Chief Administratiave Officer, JP Morgan Chase and Jason DeSena Trennert, Founder, Chief Investment Strategist, Strategas Research Partners.
The parade celebrates the spirit of exploration and courage that inspired Christopher Columbus’s 1492 expedition and the important contributions Italian-Americans have made to the United States. Over a dozen high school bands, as well as virtuosi professional groups from the United States and Italy, will march up Fifth Avenue and fill the canyons of midtown with joyous, heart-pounding music. Traditional folk groups perform centuries-old dances, and cutting-edge designs are brought to the parade route in displays of the vibrant culture that is Italy today.
