Big Apple Comic Conventions 2008

The Big Apple Convention is a Manhattan comic book convention started by Michael Carbonaro in 1996 in the basement of the Church of St. Paul the Apostle in Manhattan. It has grown into the longest-running comic book, science fiction/fantasy/horror/pop culture convention in New York City. It currently holds several events a year at the Penn Plaza Pavilion in Manhattan.

The Met’s summertime tradition of free outdoor performances returns with a special one-night only event in Prospect Park. Celebrate the start of summer with two of opera’s biggest stars – Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna- singing popular arias and duets. The exhibition tells the story of photography’s first 100 years through the work of key figures who helped shape the aesthetic and expressive course of the medium: Gustave Le Gray, Roger Fenton, Carleton Watkins, William Henry Fox Talbot, Julia Margaret Cameron, Nadar, Édouard Baldus, Charles Marville, Eugène Atget, Walker Evans, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Brassaï. The exhibition presents 10 to 12 iconic works by each of these artists to convey a broad sense of their contributions to photography. Many of the works are drawn from the Museum’s 2005 acquisition of the Gilman Collection.

George Roos is a talented veteran photographer. His professional career spans 50 years and includes prestigious assignments photographing art for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Knoedler and Hammer Galleries, The Hermitage, The Pushkin and The Russian State Museums. The last three produced catalogs for exchange exhibits which were held at the National Gallery in Washington, DC.

New York’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Pride week has a special sense of history that no other Pride celebration can offer. The organisers expect 250,000 marchers to follow the lavender strip down 5th Avenue on 29 June, with a further 350,000 spectators to cheer them on.

New York City Waterfalls is an art installation by artist Olafur Eliasson, in collaboration with the Public Art Fund, consisting of four man-made waterfalls placed around New York City. At $15.5 million, it is the most expensive public arts project since Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s installation of The Gates in Central Park.
