Tibetan Annual Carnegie Hall Benefit Concert 2008
13 February 2008
The Annual Carnegie Hall Benefit Concert for the Tibetan cause takes place at Carnegie Hall. The 2008 line-up would put many festivals to shame, with appearances by Sufjan Stevens, Marisa Monte, Nawang Khechog and music direction by Phillip Glass.
The occasion mixes up East with West and old with new. Country, pop, trance and rock, Buddhist chanting and Tibetan instruments blend together in a way that only experimental composer and pianist Philip Glass could dream up.
The Tibetan New Year is known as Losar (Lo means year and Sar means new) and the celebration can be traced back to the pre-Buddhist period in Tibet. The date was originally decided upon when the apricot trees blossomed, but with the introduction of science it came to be honoured on the first day of the first month of the lunar year. It falls on 18 February in 2007.
