Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival 2007
31 July 2007 – 25 August 2007
A major festival fixture in New York’s calendar since 1966, shortly after the Lincoln Center had opened, the annual summer jamboree that is the Mostly Mozart Festival takes over Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall (closed for renovation in 2007 and 2008) as well as the Rose and New York State Theaters for four weeks every late July and August.
It started off as Midsummer Serenades (America’s first indoor summer music festival) and, for two years, concentrated solely on Mozart. By 1970, when the name was changed to Mostly Mozart, the repertoire had expanded, hence the name change).
Gerard Schwarz became the festival’s artistic director and he led it for 18 years, before standing down after the 2001 season. Since 2003 French conductor Louis Langrée has been at the helm. New for 2007 is the appointment of Argentine-American Osvaldo Golijov as the festival’s first composer-in-residence, expanding the festival’s reach even more. Golijov’s Azul receives its New York première at the beginning of the festival (31 July & 1 August), while his La Pasión según San Marcos is performed twice with the Schola Cantorum de Caracas (18 & 19 August).
The first week is devoted to basically Beethoven, with contributions from pianist Paul Lewis, the St Lawrence String Quartet and Paavo Järvi conducting his Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. Langrée also conducts a four-hour reconstruction concert that replicates one Beethoven conducted in December 1808, including the premières of Fifth & Sixth Pastoral Symphonies, the Fourth Piano Concerto and Choral Fantasy (with pianist Jeffrey Kahane) and the scena Ah! perfido.
The all-important Mozart component includes the Mark Morris Dance Group in his Mozart Dances, created for the Mozart 250th anniversary in 2006 and danced to two piano concertos and a piano duet (played by Emanuel Ax and Yoko Nozaki) in the New York State Theater.
Amongst matinée and late-night concerts, the Mostly Mozart Orchestra – not only conducted by Langrée but also guests such as Ludovic Morlot and Osmo Vänskä – plays throughout the festival, with guest instrumentalists such as violinists Joshua Bell and Christian Tetzlaff and pianists Marc-André Hamelin. Two period-instrument ensembles make their US debuts, Zefiro from Italy (in the Gran Partita) and Swiss I Barocchisti with the Swiss Radio Chorus of Lugano (in Monteverdi’s Vespers). The Swedish Radio Choir, alongside German baritone Dietrich Henschel, also appears.
