Women’s Mini-Marathon 2008
07 June 2008
This historic ten-kilometre race through Central Park is the world’s largest women-only mini-marathon and is open to women of all ages and abilities, including top-class female athletes.
The race starts at 9am and moves round the park clockwise on a challenging course. Runners compete for more than US$30,000 in total prize money. Benefits from the race go to the New York Road Runners Foundation, which tries to boost the role of running in local youngsters’ lives.
Started in 1972, the Mini-Marathon was named after the miniskirt, which was then in fashion. In the early days it even recruited its runners from among the Playboy Bunnies. At the inauguration, when just 78 women competed, the winners were asked to pose at a press conference by pulling up their skirts to show off their legs! From these ludicrous beginnings the event has grown into a world-class athletic competition (and by the way, it’s understood that they refused).
