Winter Solstice Concerts at St John the Divine
16 – 18 December, 2010
In celebration of the winter solstice – the shortest day and longest night of the year – the Cathedral of St John the Divine hosts special concerts.
Filling this magnificent west Harlem cathedral with music, theatre and dance, “Earth musician” Paul Winter draws audiences in excess of 11,000 for four performances over three days. The concert is made up of fantastical effects which take the audience on a symbolic journey through the longest night of the year.
Making good use of the largest gothic cathedral in the world, the space is transformed into a theatrical stage with a gigantic tam-tam gong representing the sun and a humongous ball that spins down the aisle representing the Earth. But this is just a taster. Each year has its own unique style and flavour and, frankly, seeing is believing. We can only say that if you’re intrigued then check it out. Make sure you get there early – the secret’s definitely out on this one.
