Union Square celebrates summer each Wednesday throughout July and August with a series of free concerts, storytelling and dance performances. The festivities begin at lunchtime with live bands, storytelling takes place at teatime and dance performances kick off after that, all on the centre lawn of Union Square Park.
Each act is different depending on the day and a wide variety of styles are covered, from Irish step dancing, opera and jazz to African drumming and guest appearances by literary characters.
Summer in the Square began as part of an effort to rejuvenate the Union Square neighbourhood. Since then the series has grown from a small community affair to one of Manhattan's most popular and eclectic outdoor events.
