Cherry Blossom Festival 2008
03-04 May 2008
Brooklyn Botanic Garden‘s cherry trees flower in spring every year. To celebrate the new flowers and the new season, New York’s Japanese community gathers to dance to the sound of flutes and Taiko drumming and to enjoy Japanese classical dance and folk music, tea ceremonies and traditional food.
The cherry blossom is the national flower in Japan, where it grows wild throughout the country as well as being widely cultivated in cities. It is believed to symbolise the life of the samurai which, like the flower, is short-lived. The beauty of this Japanese icon is well represented, with more than 200 trees of 42 varieties blooming in different parts of the garden.
