Annual ISI Figure Skating Competition

For 28 years, hundreds of amateur figure skaters from around the world have tested their skills in Sky Rink’s ISI Team Competition. The largest ISI competition on the East coast, Sky Rink’s ISI Team Competition is open to competitors of all ages and skating levels. This event is free to the public.

Taste of Times Square

Over 40 of the best restaurants in Times Square offer their finest tastes from around the globe at Taste of Times Square – the annual outdoor food and music festival. Festival admission is free. Each “taste” ticket is $1 with dishes ranging from $1-$6. The event takes place from 5:00 – 9:00 pm on 46th Street between Broadway and 9th Avenue.

Shakespeare in the Park Summer 2014

“Shakespeare in the Park” is an annual theater festival held in the summer in New York City’s Central Park. Tickets to Shakespeare in the Park are always free, which contributes to the popularity of the event. Long queues for the free tickets are a common sight near the Delacorte Theater in Central Park, particularly during the end of a show’s run and during productions with big name stars. Patrick Stewart, Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman, Jimmy Smits, Allison Janney, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Kline are among the actors who have graced the Delacorte stage in recent years. As part of the summer 2014 production, Shakespeare in the Park will showcase two plays – – Much Ado About Nothing from June 3 to July 6, 2014 and King Lear from July 22 to August 17, 2014.

The Big Apple Barbecue Block Party is one of the country’s premiere festivals, attracting people from near and far to celebrate America’s authentic culinary and musical traditions in Madison Square Park each June. Madison Square Park is located on Madison Avenue between 23rd and 26th Street. Event admission is free for this weekend long event that boasts award-winning barbecue and Southern-inspired fare from the country’s top pitmasters, and features live performances from emerging and established musical artists. The Eighth Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party returns to Madison Square Park June 7 – 8, 2014, from 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The country’s best barbecue is available from top pitmasters for only $9 per plate.

Belmont Stakes Horse Race 2014

The Belmont Stakes Horse Race is the third and final leg of the US Triple Crown, following the Kentucky Derby, and the Preakness Stakes. The 146th running of the Belmont Stakes will take place on Saturday, June 7, 2014. Horse racing enthusiasts are very excited about this year’s race as ‘California Chrome’, winner of the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness will be running in the Belmont Stakes in the hopes of winning a Triple Crown. The Triple Crown is the highest honor in the world of horse racing. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was ‘Affirmed’ in 1978.

Coney Island Mermaid Parade

The Mermaid Parade is the nation’s largest art parade and one of New York City’s greatest summer events. The Parade is characterized by participants dressed in hand-made costumes as Mermaids, Neptunes and various sea creatures. The parade starts at West 21st Street and Surf Ave in Coney Island, Brooklyn.

The New York Gay Pride Parade is the culmination of the week long Gay Pride celebrations taking place in NYC from June 24 to 29th, 2014. Laverne Cox, Rea Carey and Jonathan Groff have been announced as the 2014 Parade Grand Marshals. Other events during Gay Pride week are a Family Night, a Rally at Pier 26 in Tribeca and ‘Dance on the Pier’, featuring a concert by Demi Lovato at Hudson River Park, Pier 26.

Midsummer Night Swing, Lincoln Center

The world’s finest dance bands turn Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park into New York’s favorite open-air dance party — for pros and newcomers alike. Join the electrifying sounds of swing, salsa, R&B, disco, tango, and much, much more. Tickets for individual evening events are $17.Each evening of Midsummer Night Swing is a ticketed event. The night begins with a dance lesson at 6:30 pm for all skill levels with some of New York’s foremost instructors. Lessons are included in the price of admission. Live music and dancing begins at 7:30 pm until 10 pm. Shows take place in the open-air ballroom in Damrosch Park (West 62nd Street between Columbus and Amsterdam) Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Summer evenings in New York City are best enjoyed by taking in a FREE outdoor movie screening with your friends or loved ones. The Bryant Park Film Festival is a popular FREE Summer Movie Series. Screenings take place every Monday at dusk, starting at sun down, between 8 and 9 PM. The Film Festival will kick off with ‘Saturday Night Fever’ on June 16 and ends with Jack Nicholson’s ‘The Shining’ on August 18th.

Puerto Rican pride will be on display at the annual Puerto Rican Day Parade on June 8, 2014. The Puerto Rican Parade has grown to become one of the largest parades in New York City, with nearly two million spectators annually making it one of the largest outdoor events in the United States. The parade marches on Fifth Ave between 44th and 86th Sts starting at 11AM.

SummerStage, a program of City Parks Foundation, presents performances of outstanding artistic quality, FREE of charge, to serve the diverse communities of New York City. The Central Park concerts take place at Rumsey Playfield (closest entrance is at 5th Ave and 72nd St). performers this year include Gavin DeGraw, Neon Trees and Counting Crows. SummerStage events also take place at other locations throughout the city. All SummerStage shows go on rain or shine.

River to River Festival 2014

Experience intimate and provocative dance, music, visual art, and new media projects in public parks, in historic landmarks, on Governors Island, and along the waterfront as part of the Annual River to River festival. The festival takes place in multiple venues in downtown Manhattan including World Financial Center, Battery Park and South Street Seaport. All events are FREE.
