Harlem Week 2007
01 August 2007 – 31 August 2007
Be prepared for a pleasant surprise: Harlem Week is in fact a month-long outdoor festival, held every year during August. It celebrates Harlem’s rich and diverse culture by organising a range of activities from jazz concerts, block parties and fashion shows to fund-raisers and city tours.
First organised in 1974 by the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce as a one-day event to lift the sprits of Harlemites weighed down by the negative images associated with the area, this festival is one of the largest cultural celebrations in the country, attracting millions of visitors each year.
The theme for 2007 is “Discover Harlem”. This year’s highlights include: the annual “Hollywood In Harlem”, which this year celebrates the works of acclaimed director Spike Lee; an outdoor Cultural Arts & Entertainment Festival honouring the grand village of Harlem; a Children’s Festival; a week-long block party and, of course, Harlem Day on 19 August.
