Statue of Liberty
Lady Enlightening the World
Liberty Enlightening the World, known more commonly as the Statue of Liberty, is a colossal statue given to the United States by France in 1886, standing at Liberty Island, in the mouth of the Hudson River in New York Harbor as a welcome to all visitors, immigrants, and returning Americans.
The statue depicts a woman standing upright, dressed in a flowing robe and a seven point spiked crown representing the Seven Seas, holding a stone tablet close to her body in her left hand and a flaming torch high in her right hand. The statue is 151 feet (46 meters) and one inch tall, with the foundation adding another 154 feet (46.9 meters). The tablet contains the text “JULY IV MDCCLXXVI” (July 4, 1776) commemorating the date of the United States Declaration of Independence.
Liberty Island is accessible by Circle Line-Statue of Liberty Ferry, Inc. ferries only. One round trip ferry ticket includes visits to Liberty and Ellis Islands.
Since a visit to New York is not complete without seeing Lady Liberty, expect long lines at all times. You will have to wait in one line to purchase ferry tickets and afterwards, join a much longer line to board the ferry to Liberty Island. It is highly recommended to purchase tickets online.
If you would like to take a tour inslide the Statue, additional Monument passes must be purchased. The Monument Pass allows you to go inside the pedestal, see the interior structure of the Statue, take in sweeping 360-degree views from the pedestal observation deck and Ft. Wood. However, Monument passes will have to be purchased well in advance, as they are sold out at least two months prior to any date.
Liberty Island was heavily damaged due to Hurricane Sandy in 2012. Even though Lady Liberty herself was spared, the damage to the surrounding buildings and infrastructure has forced the National Park Services to close the Statue of Liberty to tourists so repairs can be made. The Statue of Liberty is expected to re-open her doors to visitors on July 4th, 2013.
