New York Yankee Stadium
Yankee Stadium is the home stadium of the New York Yankees, the World’s Best baseball team, winner of 27 World Series Championships. The Yankee Stadium is located at East 161st Street and River Avenue in the Bronx.
The Yankees played their first season in The New Yankee Stadium in 2009. The Old Yankee Stadium was often referred to as “The House that Ruth Built”, and sometimes as simply “The Stadium”. It was the first baseball park to be labeled a “Stadium” rather than a “Field,” a “Park,” or a “Grounds,”. After the construction of the new stadium, the Old Yankee Stadium was demolished in 2010. It is being converted to parkland and will be called “Heritage Field.”
The baseball season usually runs from April to November when the weather is warm enough for outdoor sports.
Monument Park is a section of Yankee Stadium which contains the Yankees’ retired numbers, a collection of monuments and plaques pertaining to the New York Yankees and other events to take place at the stadium and in the city.
The Yankees Museum, located on the lower level at Gate 6, displays a wide range of Yankees’ memorabilia. A “Ball Wall” features hundreds of balls autographed by past and present Yankees, and there are plans to eventually add autographs for every living player who has played for the Yankees. The centerpiece of the museum is a tribute to Don Larsen’s perfect game in the 1956 World Series, with a commemorative home plate in the floor and statues of Larsen pitching to Yogi Berra. Along with a facsimile of a current locker from the Yankees’ clubhouse, fans can view the locker of the late Thurman Munson, which sat unoccupied in the previous stadium’s Yankee clubhouse in honor of Munson.
One of the most distinguishing characteristics of the Old Yankee Stadium was the facade. Originally, the facade was a series of copper arches (painted white in the 1960s) that ran around the roof of the grandstand’s upper deck. However, the renovation of the 1970s greatly scaled back this roof, and the facade was removed. A white replica was run along the bleacher billboards and scoreboard, where it stands to this day. In the new stadium, the facade will return to the upper deck roof.
The facade has been re-created in the New Stadium. The Facade is used as an icon for Yankee Stadium, and the New York Yankees ballclub. This can be clearly seen in its major use in graphics for the YES Network.
