Wild Holiday Party

On December weekends, visitors to Central Park'ss Wildlife Center can watch resident polar bears - Gus, Ida and Lily - tearing open their Christmas presents. This year they'll be getting delectable foodstuffs such as frozen "fishsicles", peanut butter-smeared balls and, best of all, turkey legs.

Built in the 1920's, the East 180th Street Maintenance Shop was at one time the largest in the IRT system. The shop was completely refurbished in the late 1990s to maintain a new generation of subway cars. Join us for a look behind-the-scenes with Superintendent Joe Tassiello and learn about the operation, staff, and daily activities at this unique facility. The tour involves climbing stairs. Participants are welcome to bring lunch and eat onsite.

The "Honeymooners" won't be along for the ride in this tour, but it is sure to be a real treat! Jackie Gleason Bus Depot, in Sunset Park, was originally a passenger terminal and then served as an inspection shop for elevated cars. Named in 1988 in honor of the actor who played bus driver Ralph Kramden, the depot was the first to support buses using compressed natural gas.
